Poll Time!

The last poll asked the question "What do you Think of a Michigan X-C Ski Pass? It was based on a proposal coming from a UP ski club, and would be similar to a program in Minnesota. It was explained in the article: License to Ski?

Here's what you thought. I had hoped that people would check either "I like it" OR "I don't like it" and then add some explanatory choice. 2 people said they don't like it, and no one said they like it. However, there were 4 positive responses: one person said they would enjoy a yearly patch, and 4 people said that it would be worth it for better trails.

One person said that we pay enough already, and 3 people said they don't ski enough to want to pay a fee.

Perhaps the most interesting response is that 3 people said that volunteers do most of the work anyway. This is true in some cases. In our area, both the Oceana Cross Country Ski Association, and the Manistee X-C Ski Council do a great job of maintaining trails. But this is not the case everywhere, all the time. In our own region, the Blood Creek X-C trails just south of Baldwin have been abandoned because after volunteers agreed to maintain it the group fell apart and, in this case, the Forest Service, had no funds to maintain it. Currently the Silver Creek Pathway near Luther, under the DNR, is not being groomed, also for lack of funds.

Whether we like it or not, we may reach a point where some fee will be charged if we want more maintained trails.

I clicked 2-3 times a week. I think it's usually more than that, but there have been a few weeks where I've been trapped inside for way too long. By the time I get home from work it's already getting dark, so that cuts my time too. I'm glad the days are now getting longer.
