Michigan Adventure Races- January and May

Events Calendar

Adventure Races involve a combination of orienteering, hiking/running, paddling, and bicycling. Participants attempt to check in at various waypoints in any order. Single entrants or teams compete. Some people simply want to see how many checkpoints they can find. Others compete for prizes- to collect all the checkpoints in the shortest time. They are timed events. You have anywhere from 3 to 8 hours to complete the course, depending on the event.

Usually logo gear and a meal are included in the registration fee.

The largest winter Adventure Race in the United States is held in Rockford, Michigan. The 2026 date is January 17. It is expected to sell out at 475 participants. This is the 15th year for the Winter Adventure Race.

The Winter Race is a 3-hour event, presented by the Village of Cannonsburg and the Honey Creek Inn. Run or hike, search for checkpoint flags, and conquer Amazing Race-like challenges in up to three hours of time flying by.

Registration is still open, but a late fee is charged at this point.

On May 30, 2026, Muskegon State Park will host both a 5-hour and 8-hour Adventure Race.

Experience fun and challenging trekking, orienteering, paddling, and biking over some of the most beautiful terrain in and around Muskegon State Park, along gorgeous Lake Michigan. You and your teammate(s) will race together to find as many checkpoints as you can in the time period.

Both courses feature a nice mix of packed, marked trails and off-trail running with manageable amounts of sand, scenic flat-water paddling, and fast gravel and paved road biking (no singletrack trails in the area). Most teams are projected to get the majority of checkpoints within 4 or 7 hours. We will give a bonus hour for each race to help those teams get back to the finish in time so the final cutoffs will be 5 and 8 hours.

"Teams" can be solo individuals, any combination of 2-4 persons over age 14, and family teams where at least one participant is under 14 (must be a family member).

from Phast Adventures

Phast Adventures and Trailhead Bike Shop are planning the second annual Urban Adventure Run. The event is part scavenger hunt, part running race, and all fun. The course is approximately four miles. Teams of two will enter, and be timed from the starting point, which is 108 Threads, located downtown. Clues will lead teams to various points of interest, POI, in Ludington. Teams will receive clues, a map and a "passport."

At each POI there is a flag with a number and a punch. Teams will punch the corresponding number on their passport. The object is to return to 108 Threads with all numbers punched.

There will be winners for male/male teams, female/female, and male/female teams. Drawings for several random winners will also be made. Entrants may take any route they wish to reach the POIs, so good planning may overcome speed. Running is not required. Fun is emphasized.

based on a news story in the Ludington Daily News

Local men, Todd Henrickson and Geoff Paine, are the winners of the first Hamlin Blast Adventure Race. This honor did not come to them from lack of competition! 36 teams, made up of 77 racers entered the three-part event.

Adventure Races consist of bicycling, orienteering, and canoeing. This new venue includes portions of Hamiln and Victory Townships in Mason County. Paul Havens of Jenison chose to come north rather than participate in a Kalamazoo triathalon. His teammate voiced their excitement at the choice: "It was a blast," he said.

Event organizers Andy Klevorn and Dave Maclean were pleased with the turnout. "Congrats to all the racers who finished their first race, it's quite an accomplishment to put it all together," they wrote in the race wrap-up. They are hoping to attract 200 racers next year. Maclean and Klevorn have teamed up and participated in six previous Adventure Races.

Adventure Race is New Pentwater Summer Event

Summer Groove is a 15-hour endurance event being held on July 28 in Pentwater

The endurance race will run from 3 am to 6 pm and includes orienteering, mountain biking, canoeing, trekking and rope use. There will be solo, two-person, co-ed, male, female and four-person co-ed divisions.

"This is going to be a big event drawing lots of new visitors into the community. There will be 250 entrants, plus their families," Shaw [Pentwater Chamber of Commerce Executive Director] said.

Matt VanderSys of Endurance Sports in Muskegon began talking to Shaw two years ago.

"He thought Pentwater was a lovely town and would be a great place to have a triathlon," Shaw said. "I proposed it to the chamber board but they didn't want to do that. Matt came back to me with the endurance thing, the board approved that, and I jumped right on it.

"The area has a lot of natural wilderness," VanderSys said. "It has waterways, elevation changes, trails and two-tracks, which are all the things we look for."
